At the beginning of the 19th century, around a hundred German booksellers in Leipzig came together to optimize the settlement process between publishers and booksellers. Over the decades, as the number of members grew, so did their political influence. Since then, the Börsenverein has defended copyright protection as well as the fixed book price system. Additionally, it organizes the world's largest book fair in Frankfurt, awards the German Book Prize and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, and hosts reading competitions. This book provides an overview of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, its subsidiaries, members, and activities.
