We know dandelion as a meadow plant that we feed to our rabbits and guinea pigs, or as a puffball that we simply enjoy. However, scientists have discovered the great potential of this wild plant as an industrial crop: the root of the Russian dandelion contains ten percent rubber – that is, natural latex. This makes it valuable, as about ninety percent of the world's natural rubber needs have been met by Southeast Asian rubber trees, but there are fewer trees than the demand, causing the price of natural rubber to skyrocket. Additionally, the Russian dandelion consists of twenty percent inulin, which is interesting for the sweetener industry as a sugar substitute. This book provides an overview of dandelion and the anticipated applications.
