According to Catholic canon law, there is no provision for the divorce of a marriage, because anyone who has a Catholic wedding should be convinced that what God has brought together, a person should not divorce. Catholic divorcees are therefore left only with the option of applying for an annulment of the marriage, which more than a thousand German couples do each year. The Catholic Church is calling for more respect for the sacrament of marriage and therefore wants to examine couples' religious convictions more closely in the future before they are married.
