The Scottish philosopher David Hume was born in the early 18th century—a time when fanatical representatives of Calvinism and Catholicism were battling each other and all those deemed unbelievers. In contrast, Hume advocated that one should not rely solely on God, nor on pure reason or even philosophy, but rather on one's own observations and insights gained from personal experiences. Imagined, fabricated, learned knowledge, traditions, or blind faith in authority are just as obstructive as the religion one clings to out of fears of the future, which only serve to exacerbate those fears.
