Scleroderma is a rare autoimmune disease of the connective tissue that can become life-threatening if internal organs such as the lungs, kidneys, and/or heart are affected. Early signs include episodic circulation disturbances in the fingers or toes. Other symptoms include poorly mobile joints and mask-like rigid facial features. So far, only the symptoms are treatable, but research activities have intensified across Europe in recent years.
