Even fathers have their days: Mr. Midgley's father triumphs even beyond his end, while Mr. Bennett's father truly exaggerates his misanthropy at the end. Mr. Midgley has often fantasized about his father's death and imagined himself playing an active role in it. However, it all unfolds quite differently than he envisioned, and the old man proves to be superior to him even at the last moment: he opens his eyes one last time just as the son has swapped his place at the bedside with that of the nurse. His last words reflect a rather perfidious paternal love. In contrast, Mr. Bennett Sr. is of an entirely different caliber, a loving husband who doesn't want to miss a single moment of visiting time at his wife's bedside. A shy man who can only manage to get his driver's license with a lot of encouragement.
