This work offers an unusual perspective on the oeuvre of Arno Schmidt, particularly focusing on the novella "From the Life of a Faun." While early research on this novel concentrated on individual textual analyses and conceptual explanations, subsequent approaches have explored the reception history of literary expressionism in Schmidt's work, especially his numerous adaptations of the poetic language of August Stramm. There has also been an effort to contextualize the novel within the autopoetic self-interpretations of its author. This work consciously takes a different path: it establishes a connection to the Otto-Mueller complex in Arno Schmidt's work, incorporating perspectives from a visual studies approach that has been emerging since the 1990s, which has also prompted literary studies to expand its concept of imagery.
