Fine motor skills are essential in preschool age. They are important for a range of play activities, support abilities in the area of social independence, such as dressing and undressing or tying shoelaces, and have been repeatedly linked to academic success. But what about the significance of fine motor skills for a child's cognitive development? Such a connection has been widely assumed until now. Philipp Martzog subjects this assumption to a stricter empirical test for the first time and shows that the relationship between fine motor and cognitive abilities is even more complex than we previously believed. Also of interest to practitioners and researchers are the fine motor test tasks that Martzog has specifically developed for use with younger children.
