In his book, Wolfgang Kauer explores the rock paintings of the Eastern Alps, whose origins date back to the prehistoric societies of the northern pre-Alps region. The early Europeans not only found game and ores in the mountains but also made contact with their gods and ancestors. The rock paintings testify to their religious beliefs, needs, and most intimate desires. In a blend of novel and non-fiction, more than 150 of the most significant rock paintings in Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Carinthia, and Tyrol, as well as in the Bavarian pre-Alps, are presented in detail. The book provides insight into prehistoric beliefs and religious rites and examines the moon cult of the pre-Christian matriarchal society, which was led by a powerful Earth Mother, of whom the moon was seen as a reflection.
