In this book, I discuss a body that is both sensual and constantly engaged in an exchange between affect and representation, between primary process with its various layers of unconsciousness and the organizations that determine the secondary process. I talk about a body that is at the mercy of conflicts and passions, the pitfalls of enjoyment, the errors of identification, and the illusions of objects in the service of satisfying narcissistic and Oedipal fantasies. The language and deep feelings evoked by the beings that circulate through human flesh leave traces, signs, trophic envelopes, and wounds, both roughness and tenderness.
