Feminist theology and gender are not identical, but they can complement each other in many ways. While feminist theology primarily focused on the undervaluation, disadvantage, and oppression of women, gender studies encompass research on men, women, and gender. It has become clear that it is not enough to look at one side alone; rather, the interconnection of the issues must be recognized and addressed. At the turn of the 21st century, numerous new methods in various sciences have changed the landscape. Globalization has also impacted theology. It is no longer sufficient to focus solely on one's own theological discipline; interdisciplinary work is increasingly required. This has already been the case in feminist theology, which had to look beyond its own boundaries. Today, additional questions are emerging that also need to be addressed.
