Still on the way to the front in Galicia, the regiment of Upper Austrian Josef Mörwald receives the order to turn back. The artillery unit he belongs to is now needed in Carinthia. With Italy's declaration of war on Austria in 1915, the Alps and thus the border in Carinthia became a war zone. Mörwald's unit takes position in the Carnic Alps near the Plöcken Pass and becomes involved in the fierce battles for the Cellon and the Kleiner Pal. Born in 1894, Mörwald is both a participant and an attentive observer of the mountain warfare. From the very beginning, he records his experiences, observations, and thoughts in a diary. His accounts not only describe artillery duels and mutual assaults in the exhausting trench warfare but also vividly illustrate the efforts and hardships required to conduct warfare in the high mountains amidst constant alpine dangers.
