Product details

Field rabbis reflect the presence of German Jewish soldiers on the fronts of World War I. The Jewish communities and organizations associated this with the hope for an increasing recognition of the Jewish community and its religion by the surrounding society. Among the central tasks of the field rabbis were, in addition to actual religious pastoral care, the distribution of religious literature and care packages from home, the organization of entertainment evenings and lectures, as well as service in hospitals. Following the so-called Jewish census of 1916, they also intensified their efforts against anti-Semitism within the German armed forces. This book presents, for the first time, the field rabbis and field assistant rabbis of the German armed forces identified through extensive research, along with comprehensive documents of their activities.
