Product details

Figure I and Figure II are two young women who immediately provoke confusion upon viewing. Figure I is photographed against a neutral background, posing in various postures and outfits that defy fixed role assignments. Depending on the shot, the person appears more feminine or masculine—no clear categorization is possible. Similarly, Figure II stands in front of a slatted curtain, trying on a beanie. The attributions blur just like with Figure I, which is what Andrzej Steinbach aims for. In his two black-and-white portrait series, nothing is definitive, and they invite careful observation and comparison—similar to the photo studies of Marianne Wex. The artist plays with the gestural vocabulary of fashion photography, which he continually subverts to extract the residual identities of his models. Figure I, Figure II, Sprengel Museum Hannover.
