From Berlin's backyards to industrial complexes, from the SED district leader to Wehrmacht and NVA generals, from the barriers of the Wall to community gardens - all of this was captured by the State Film Documentation of the GDR between 1970 and 1986 in three hundred film documents. The film group was able to interview personalities from politics, art, culture, and science away from the public eye and beyond film censorship, while also documenting everyday life in the GDR: the lives of large families and illegal squatters, work in industrial enterprises or on a cancer ward, a shift of the People's Police, or children on the schoolyard. The aim was to create films for the future. Only later generations would receive a complete and uncensored picture of the GDR. The films of the State Film Documentation remained inaccessible in the archive.
