Germany is taking a unique approach to refugee policy in Europe. Under the banner of humanitarian aid, refugees are allowed into the country without limits and are provided with financial support. Refugees who have the right to stay are promised that they can build a new professional future in Germany and remain permanently. For this purpose, they receive financial support as unemployed recipients of Hartz IV from the job centers of the Federal Employment Agency and are assisted in their job search. The central focus of German refugee policy is thus the integration of refugees into the labor and housing markets. The (mis)success of this integration will significantly determine how much the German special path will cost taxpayers and whether the majority of predominantly Muslim refugees will develop into socially integrated citizens or become additional members of already existing parallel societies.
