Product details

In August 1944, two inmates of the Auschwitz concentration camp managed to take a series of photographs of the executions. While one of the inmates kept an eye on the SS guards, a fellow prisoner captured four images showing the area around the crematorium. Georges Didi-Huberman explores the paradox of these images in his new book: that they reveal almost nothing, yet are nonetheless irreplaceable remnants. These photographs are, as the title of the volume suggests, images despite everything, images malgré tout. "Let us not invoke the unimaginable" – with this call, Didi-Huberman begins. From the outset, this expresses skepticism towards the thesis that the murders committed in the camps are cases of the utterly unimaginable. Among many others, the French psychoanalyst Gérard Wajcman has repeatedly supported this view.
