Product details

In February 1987, just weeks before his death, Jacob Taubes delivered four lectures on Paul to a small audience, which he regarded as his intellectual legacy. In these lectures, he enters the field of Pauline studies, a domain of Christian biblical scholarship, as a radical outsider. In his counter-reading of the Epistle to the Romans, he places traditional themes in entirely new contexts, thereby highlighting the Jewish elements that have been erased from the Christian Paul. Taubes does not see his engagement with the Jewish Paul as a mere scholarly-historical reconstruction. Rather, he aims to open up perspectives on forms of faith and life at this intersection of Judaism and early Christianity that have been buried by institutional solidification and completely suppressed in historical development. The lectures represent a Jewish deconstruction of the Christian reception history of the Epistle to the Romans, which is dominated by the formula 'faith instead of works.' 3rd improved edition 2003.
