In 1781, the philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) proclaims the "Age of Critique." Everything must submit to the "free and public examination" by reason: religion, legislation, and primarily pure reason itself. In its unbridled quest for knowledge, it becomes entangled in endless disputes with itself. It is no wonder, then, that the old metaphysics is a battleground where a "sturdy knight" carries off the "laurel wreath" as long as he does not have to withstand a new attack from the opponent. The critique provides a remedy, a court established by pure reason to decide on its legitimate and illegitimate claims. The critique establishes peace in the realm of thought.
