Since the 1960s, Dieter Henrich has worked to develop a theory of art alongside a theory of subjectivity. This volume brings together texts that mark key stages on this path and serve as orientation points for art theory in its execution. It begins with an essay on subjectivity and art, which unfolds the basic principles of the theory. This is followed by four influential but partly unpublished essays that, following an interpretation of the systematics of Hegel's aesthetics, outline the fundamental aspects of a diagnosis of the state of art in modernity. The volume also includes a series of essays, including those on Richard Wagner, Samuel Beckett, Ernst Gombrich, and some specific aspects of the foundations and contents of a theory of art.
