After the end of the last major German offensive in the East, Operation "Citadel," Karl-Heinz Rehfeldt, now promoted to corporal in the "Grossdeutschland" Division, is deployed with his comrades as firefighters at the hotspots of the Russian front. Commanded to the reinforced IR (mot.) 1029 "Grossdeutschland," he participates in Operation "Margarethe I" in Hungary. In May 1944, he returns to his old unit, the mortar squad, and experiences the heavy defensive battles in Romania and, starting in August 1944, in East Prussia and Lithuania. After being transported from the Kessel of Memel by ship to Königsberg, he participates in the fighting in East Prussia in the winter of 1945 and in the Kessel of Königsberg. Constantly exposed to attacks from Russian bombers and ground attack aircraft, and severely wounded in the leg, he makes his way from Balga to Rosenb with a horse-drawn cart.
