Product details
In 1959, Florian Köhler founded the group WIR in Munich with two fellow students. The programmatic starting point for the renewal of contemporary art was to be the sense of "we" and the claim of "we" to create something together, where each work would be individual yet simultaneously an expression of a collective. In 1966, WIR merged with the group SPUR, also based in Munich, to form GEFLECHT. The men's group viewed itself and its collective artistic work as an experiment, perhaps also as a response to the question of the socio-political relevance of art. GEFLECHT proclaimed: "There will be no more pictures and no more sculptures." This referred to "anti-objects" that connected the two-dimensional space of art with the three-dimensional space of sculpture. After the group's dissolution in 1968, Köhler shifted his focus to Hamburg and returned to painting. In the series of works from the 1980s and 1990s, figures are integrated as shorthand into the color material. Florian Köhler is concerned with formless space, with a concretization in color. Color, line, and weave remain his symbols for the "expression of our behavior towards the world." In his paintings, Köhler portrays the artist as an eternal nomad. In his more recent works, he impressively demonstrates the tireless effort and search in potentially infinite variations and approaches to question, explore, and translate the relationship of the subjective painter to the mystery of existence of humanity and the world into a lasting image. The monograph features numerous paintings and objects from the years 1960 to 2010, as well as some pastels from the artist's current work.
