Digital media are increasingly prevalent in both private and professional spheres. However, in the training of certain professions, they play only a minor role. Many educators have a very reserved attitude towards digital media and internet applications. This paper first highlights the reasons why the integration of digital media in vocational training is necessary. It clarifies that the conditions regarding competence development and the concept of lifelong learning apply to all professions, and that media literacy can be seen as a new cultural technique that has become a cross-cutting competence in all fields. It presents the forms of digital media as well as social software technologies and their potential use in vocational education. The role of teaching is also discussed.
