Jan had always suspected that there must be a family secret. But he didn't know what it was about. Two weeks after the death of his Polish father, a pastor, Jan discovers documents during the clearing of the apartment that completely throw him off balance: he finds out that he was adopted by his Polish parents, that his parents were German, and that he has three older brothers. Towards the end of the war, his mother had placed him in a children's home in Gleiwitz because he was only a few months old and would not have survived the escape. She intended to retrieve him after the war ended. But when the war was over, Gleiwitz no longer belonged to Germany.
