Hans Georg Calmeyer from Osnabrück (1903-1972) worked in the German administration of the occupied Netherlands during World War II. He saved nearly 3,000 Jewish men and women from certain death, but he also issued negative decisions in several hundred cases, thereby contributing to their deportation and death. Based on the structural conditions of the Nazi administration in the occupied territories, the essays examine the possibilities and limitations of rescue actions in occupied Europe between 1939 and 1945, using Calmeyer and other actors as examples. How are their biographies to be historically classified and evaluated from today's perspective? The concluding panel discussion focuses on questions of remembrance and the transmission of historical actions in the present.
