The gaze drifts away, almost always passing the viewer by to a place outside the picture. It is the presence of absence that Torsten Hattenkerl captures in his portraits of women. Women in the middle of their lives, focused on something, someone, the present, but perhaps also already occupied with tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, or even yesterday in their thoughts. Forty portraits, divided into two series of black-and-white close-ups and colored full shots, create an illusion of closeness - and then again distance, depending on how close they appear to us. It is the gazes of these women that the artist captures. And they resonate.
