Product details
At the vibrant Midsummer Night's celebration at her father's house, the noble Julie dances with the servant Jean. The emotional world of the young woman, who has been raised to think and act like a man, is violently shaken by their encounter, and the desire to escape the narrow confines of her social class with Jean grows stronger throughout the evening. Although Jean is also drawn to her, his self-interest and opportunism ultimately prevail, leaving Julie with only one way out. This naturalistic drama highlights the destructive power of the strict social hierarchies and constrained gender roles of the late 19th century. Written in 1888 and premiered in Copenhagen in 1889, "Miss Julie" is now one of Strindberg's most frequently performed plays.
