Volume I: The oldest gospel is the gospel that was received in the 2nd century by Marcion and others. The precise reconstruction of this text, as well as the demonstration that all canonical gospels depend on it, allows for significant insights into important fields of New Testament scholarship: the history of the origin and transmission of the gospels, the textual history of the New Testament, the formation of the canonical edition of the New Testament, and the history of Christianity in the 2nd century. Volume 1 contains the study that determines the relationship between Luke and the oldest gospel, as well as a model for the development of the gospels leading to the canonical four-gospel book. Volume II: The reconstruction of the oldest gospel forms the basis for the investigation of the canonical gospel tradition from the earliest version.
