South Africa 1932. Kate is tired of being wrapped in cotton wool by her family. The ambitious sociology student from a good family wants to study poverty among whites in South Africa as part of her studies. To do this, she must go into the poor neighborhoods. However, her father fears for his daughter's well-being, and her fiancé has concerns as well. But Kate is persistent. Eventually, her father assigns her an employee as a bodyguard.
