Product details

A man who, as it is said, has been having sixteen five-liter cans of oil paint delivered to his studio in Camden Town in North London every few weeks for over 60 years: What has he created from this? Frank Auerbach is considered one of the most important British painters of his generation, alongside Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Born in 1931 in Berlin, he managed to escape the Nazis, unlike his parents, and find a new home in England. Since then, he has produced an extremely idiosyncratic body of work characterized by its challenging qualities. Auerbach stands in the tradition of Cézanne. Like Cézanne with his still lifes of apples or the Montagne Sainte Victoire, he is interested in the truth of what is seen. Here, Invar-Torre Hollaus offers a clever, sensitive, and highly inspired guide to seeing with his work. He is exceptionally knowledgeable about theoretical and philosophical questions concerning images.
