Paul Celan's oeuvre is multifaceted. Markus Fischer analyzes its poetological, literary-historical, interpretative, and poetic-translational aspects. In Celan's Büchner Prize speech "The Meridian," he uncovers the poetic realization of the poetics unfolded within it and places this in the context of Celan's poetry. Through selected poems, he highlights central poetological concepts of Celan. He examines "The Conversation in the Mountains" against the backdrop of the literary motif of wandering from Romanticism to the present. Special attention is given to the lyrical work of Celan's youth friend Immanuel Weissglas. Fischer also addresses Celan's intentions in translating Romanian poems into German (by Tudor Arghezi, Gellu Naum, Virgil Teodorescu, and Nina Cassian).
