Product details

The diplomacy of early 19th century Europe is primarily associated with one name: Klemens von Metternich. A staunch advocate of monarchy, the Austrian chancellor fiercely opposed the rising national and democratic movements, which he viewed as a threat to the global political order. Through the lens of the independence wars of Greece (1821-1829) and Egypt (1831-1841) against the Ottoman Empire, Hüner Tuncer depicts the political maneuvers of Metternich and the European great powers; this illustrates their dilemma between conservatism, expansionist ambitions, and nationalism in a particularly striking way. At the same time, the author offers the reader a new perspective on seemingly peripheral issues that significantly shaped the foreign policy of this era.
