In Romanian historiography, a myth persists to this day: At the beginning of World War I, the Romanians—except for a few politicians—unanimously represented the national ideal; they entered the war against Austria-Hungary in order to unite with Transylvania. However, the press and other documents from that time—ignored by the supporters of the Entente and ultimately forgotten by historians—show that a significant portion of Romania's intellectual and political elite advocated for a different path. Lucian Boia presents these Germanophiles, their beliefs, motivations, and arguments. He illustrates how they behaved during the German occupation and how they politically and intellectually survived after the unexpected victory of their opponents.
