The transition from Roman rule to that of the Agilolfings remains a dark chapter in Bavarian early history. In research on the constitution of early medieval dominions in the territory of the Roman Empire, the search for continuities and breaks in tradition is at the forefront. With the concept of fiscal succession, the transfer of Roman legal and property titles into the control of subsequent rulers, the author addresses the aspect of continuity: Was the new rule shaped based on ancient legal foundations, and if so, how can such connections be understood? The answer is provided by a comprehensive look at the development of the Alpine-Danube region since the Roman occupation, as well as the tradition and application of Roman legal concepts.
