Political imprisonment in communist Romania? This phenomenon was to be swept under the rug for years after the 1989 revolution. The Memorial Sighet, dedicated to the victims of communism and resistance, has taken it upon itself to remind us that this was a reality, twenty years ago. The former notorious prison in Sighet has since become a vibrant museum, a workshop for reflection, where internationally renowned scholars, eyewitnesses, students, and pupils gather each year in the school of memory. This volume recounts the story of communism in Southeast Europe, but above all, it highlights the history, strength, and success of the Memorial Sighet.
