Since the 19th century, music festivals and music events have been an essential part of European musical culture. They allowed for the demonstration of civic self-awareness and educational consciousness, as well as the establishment of regional and national identities. At the same time, they invigorated central musical genres such as symphony and oratorio. This volume provides, with its focus on the music festivals of the Baltic Sea region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a fundamental insight into this topic, which is significant not only from a musicological perspective. The central themes include the various temporal and regional expressions of the music festival idea, societal intentions and functions, organizational structures, and the staging of the events.
