The Halle-based Germanist and phonetician Otto Bremer (1862-1936) made a name for himself through numerous dialectological works, remarkable phonetic precision, and exemplary empirical studies on the pronunciation realities of various varieties. His phonetic collection, consisting of teaching and research materials, was merged in 1937 with collections related to speech science; the following year, an institute was founded that was known as the Institute for Speech Science and Phonetic Collection from 1947 onwards. This book traces Bremer's life, presents his scientific biography, and explores the relationships between him and the developing field of speech science. A significant foundation for this was the estate of Otto Bremer. Together with the documents in the university archive, the estate created a source situation that allowed for largely verified statements.
