Product details

The internet is becoming a testing ground: Engaged amateurs are venturing into areas that were previously reserved for experts. Companies that conduct translations through crowdsourcing, meaning by commissioning voluntary internet users, benefit from their ambition. What does this mean for translation quality? The author explores this question through her study of subtitled lecture videos on the TEDTalks website. In doing so, she discovers a previously overlooked form of audiovisual transcription in scientific works on subtitling. For the first German-language analysis of audiovisual translations by a "crowd," the author therefore develops an evaluation concept. This is based on traditional approaches and can be methodologically applied, in its criteria as well as instrumentally, particularly to modern translations.
