Product details

Following the inventory catalog of 'Plastics' from the porcelain factory Frankenthal (1755-1800) at the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums Mannheim, the 'Archivalien' presents the first comprehensive documentation of the factory through original documents. A total of 5,352 pages of administrative records were reviewed at the State Archive in Speyer, from which a selection was made. Unique insights are provided into the ministerial administration of the factory, including wage structures, pensions, obligations, and the existential struggles of the 'porcelain workers,' as well as issues of 'bullying' and 'rating' of their directors. The quotes illustrate the backdrop of princely table luxury and bourgeois tableware. The refined style of court officials contrasts intriguingly with the even more artfully crafted announcements of Elector Carl Theodor. For the first time, the early work of the factory is documented with the complete publication of an advertising campaign for the French market in the 'Journal de Commerce' from 1760. A new discovery is the inventory of the court confectionery of Mannheim Palace from 1763, which includes porcelain figures for the electoral dessert tables. The price list from 1777 and the lottery list from the porcelain lottery of 1773 provide evidence of the factory's overall production, especially the services with a wide variety of décors and prices. The third volume of this comprehensive work will be dedicated to Frankenthal porcelain tableware.
