The Bora blows on the small Croatian island, the cold, gusty downwind that drives boats across the sea like nutshells and brings unrest to the sun-drenched island life. The writer Mara knows the interplay of the winds, the dry, salty Bora and its counterpart, the sultry Jugo coming from the south. For years, she has spent her summers on the island, loving the scent of oleander and wild rosemary, as well as the island dialect of the fishermen who advertise the shimmering gilt-head bream in the harbor. But this summer is different. A long-term relationship has fallen apart, and she can no longer find the inspiration to write. One morning, Andrej arrives on the island - a photographer who no longer wants to take photos. He comes from one of the many emigrant families that fled communist Yugoslavia for America and return year after year during the summer months.
