The Grande Traversée des Alpes (GTA) is the spectacular last section of the GR 5 long-distance hiking trail, which stretches from Lake Geneva to Nice and crosses the French Alps once. With the Mont Blanc, the highest mountain of the Alps is also flanked. The GTA leads from north to south parallel to the French border on almost 600 km through six mountain groups: Chablais Alps, Mont Blanc Group, Vanoise Massif, Thabor Group, Cottian Alps and Maritime Alps. Each mountain group has its own character and special charm, which can be experienced extensively on this long-distance hike lasting several weeks.
The author provides a detailed description of the route for each stage, which is supplemented by maps, altitude profiles and GPS tracks. For long-distance hikers, particularly important information on accommodation, food and transport options is included in the book, as is information on highlights along the way. A detailed chapter is devoted to camping and wild camping, which offers the most intensive and independent experience as well as the greatest flexibility for experiencing the mountain world.
