In his final work, Böll has brought them to the forefront. In a world of schemes and intrigues, of striving for power and influence, where their husbands almost exclusively operate, they serve as the secret human corrective. Böll does not portray them; he does not leave traces for identifying well-known politicians. His characters are exaggerated, yet in such a way that they become recognizable as models of the Bonn scene in their unrecognizability.
