Product details

The history of roofs is several thousand years old and begins with windbreaks made of branches and simple tent shapes. The development progressed from purlin and rafter roofs, trusses, and half-timbering to increasingly sophisticated constructions with larger spans. Particularly fascinating constructions and masterpieces of building and carpentry are the wooden domes, barrels, and vaults that were developed for greater spans, such as in churches and halls, where the art and skill of the builders and carpenters are impressively reflected. This book is dedicated to them. The author explains the principles of building methods for arch-shaped wooden structures and presents them and their builders in their chronological development. Over 300 buildings from various historical periods illustrate the engineering achievements, but above all, the beauty of the structures.
