Since the Enlightenment's libertinism, "free love" has been regarded as an expression of a progressive mindset. It was celebrated during the Romantic period as well as in youth and student movements. Today, it enjoys great popularity as "polyamory," especially among cosmopolitans. Those who display jealousy or insist on emotional exclusivity are often seen, at best, as hopeless romantics, but more commonly as possessive despots. Jealousy is one of the last remaining deadly sins of modernity. The concept of an "open relationship" appears, at first glance, to be incredibly liberal and generous. No, one should not possess or even need anyone. But doesn’t this simply reflect a fear of being vulnerable and showing one’s true colors? Is marriage the end of passion, and is monogamy synonymous with boredom? Shouldn’t loyalty and exclusion be thought of differently?.
