Monk sitting cross-legged, nose twister, monster with a goat beard, or butt exposer - the original gargoyles at Freiburg Minster are fascinating. They are imaginative sculptures in the form of animals, strange hybrids, or grimacing humans, from whose mouths and maws rainwater drains, and which were presumably intended to keep demons away from the building. Heike Mittmann and Claudia Tabori present the 91 figures in detail in the ninth volume of the Münsterbauverein's publication series. Impressive close-up shots showcase the sculptures in detail. Accompanying explanatory texts bring readers closer to the grotesque yet fantastic world of the gargoyles. Historical images, photos of plaster casts, and floor plans that facilitate the location of the sculptures on the building further enrich the volume.
