Alfred Wegener (1880 - 1930) pushed the boundaries in both research and the development of new theories, as well as in his expedition activities. He studied meteorology, astronomy, and cosmic physics, while also engaging with many unsolved mysteries of nature: hurricanes, auroras, tides, meteorites, sundogs, the climate of prehistoric times, geological peculiarities, the ocean floor, and much more. Rigid disciplinary boundaries did not apply to him. This intense research attitude also shaped his geographical explorations. He initially gained fame as a balloonist, later through his three expeditions to Greenland, where he ultimately met his death.
