Product details

During the time of National Socialism, Freemasonry was regarded as an ideological opponent of Judaism. The individuals examined here were Freemasons and at the same time judges or prosecutors. The work investigates how membership in lodges affected the professional paths of these officials. After a general overview of the changes in the judiciary after 1933 and an introduction to the knowledge about Freemasonry itself, the tension between ideological opposition and the sovereign duties in state legal administration is addressed, with particular attention paid to the measures taken against the lodges and the accusations raised. Based on the degrees and functions achieved within Freemasonry, two groups are formed: Freemasons who had reached up to the Third Degree and those who had dealt with so-called higher degrees. The professional consequences of membership differed depending on whether the official was a high-degree Mason or not, as only high-degree Masons were subjected to an official promotion ban, for example.
