The handling of food and fluid intake often leads to discussions in medical practice. Particularly controversial are situations in which individuals voluntarily abstain from food and fluids in order to bring about their own death. A point of contention is whether this voluntary refusal of food and fluids constitutes a form of suicide. The work addresses the medical and nursing aspects of voluntary abstention and discusses various evaluations from medical and nursing ethics, theological, and legal perspectives.
