Friedrich Ebert (1894-1979) is one of the few social democrats who managed to establish himself permanently in the highest offices of the SED party and the East German state apparatus. To this day, the eldest son of the first Reich President of the Weimar Republic is accused of having betrayed his father's political ideals and of being partly responsible for the division of the city and the strict border regime of the GDR as the mayor of (East) Berlin. Against this background, the present volume paints a multifaceted picture of Friedrich Ebert.
