Friedrich Schiller: Wilhelm Tell
German, Friedrich Schiller, 2011Product details
From grade 8. The play Wilhelm Tell is the last dramatic work that Friedrich Schiller was able to realize during his lifetime. Premiered in Weimar in 1804, it was his greatest success while he was alive. In this play, Schiller adapted a legendary story, namely the struggle of the Swiss freedom hero against the Austrian foreign ruler, a theme that was very popular around 1800 and became even more popular through Schiller's adaptation. The history of the play's impact is a story of bans and revivals on stage. The Swiss literary scholar Walther Muschg once stated that Schiller's Tell is still the first to be banned whenever the freedom of a people is to be suppressed, and it is the first to be performed again when liberation has been achieved.
